Dad's First Shopping Expedition

Today was the first time that I had to venture out to do the shopping chores. Normally, Abbie takes care of it all. But with her being tethered to the baby who can't leave the house right now, the duties fell on me.

So, at 08:00, I awoke, after a long night with Cooper and Mother Abbie. I went through the routine of preparing to tackle the beast called Whole Foods Supermarket. When I arrived there just after 09:30, the vultures that normally populate this savannah weren't out yet. Thankfully, that meant a more prodigious selection for me. I approached the market with shopping cart in front, and wife-generated list in hand.

Dad tip: When you have to go to the supermarket, make sure you've eaten first. Whole Foods has a tendency to leave food out to sample for its patrons. I could've shaved off at least 15 minutes of my time there if I wasn't so hungry that I was whipping that cart around every corner looking for free goodies.

An hour+ and almost $200 cheaper later, I left. Then it was onto the next big challenge...diaper shopping.

I hit BJ's Wholesale in Fair Lakes around 10:45. Went straight in and headed down the first aisle. Okay, no diapers here. No baby anything here. So where the heck were they? They were on the other side of this huge warehouse...at the front of the store. I could've made a simple beeline for them when I came in, except I'm a guy, and I didn't ask where they were. Instead, I just went walking down the aisles.

So when you find the diapers...then you've got a choice. Do you get Luvs, Pampers, Huggies, or the generic brand? Well, we don't know anything about the generic brand, so I discarded those immediately. The wife mentioned two brands to get...but which was it? Which is Cooper wearing now that we didn't like? Did you know that all diapers look the same with the exception of whatever cartoon characters they put on the waistband? So now I've got to figure out which brand Blues Clues is on versus Sesame Street. Fine, I choose the Pampers b/c I'm almost 100% certain those are NOT what he's wearing now. Now, you've got to get the right size. #5 diapers are for 30-40lbs, #3 diapers are for 22-28lbs...oh, damn, there's no #2 or #1 diapers. Cooper would wear the #1 or #2 diapers. Any mother that would've walked by the aisle and taken a glance at me would've known immediately that this was my first attempt at buying diapers. I was walking up and down the aisle, as if I'd find a baby diaper guide hanging on the metal racks that would make it that much easier for me. So I look closer at the boxes of diapers next to the #3 boxes of diapers.

Eureka! They're #1-2 diapers, for up to 15lbs! That's it! I've got game, baby! I grab a box and head on out. And for the record, Pampers have Sesame Street and Luvs have Blues Clues.
